Are you looking to make your mark in the digital world? want to reach a wider audience and establish your online presence effectively? look no further than google blogging, a powerful tool that can help you achieve these goals and more. in this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the world of google blogging and explore how you can harness its potential to boost your online presence, engage your audience, and drive meaningful interactions.

#1 use small paragraphs and short sentences

you should avoid composing your blog content in one big block. Reading large blocks of content can be very tiring especially when you are reading from a screen. try to write your blog posts in short sentences and short paragraphs. Short sentences are easier to read and understand than long sentences.

As a guideline, make sure your sentences in your blog posts are under 20 words. Also, make sure the paragraphs are not too long. Ideally, your paragraph should contain no more than six sentences.

use more white space in your content. this will lead to better readability and results in more people wanting to read your blog posts

Below are two example paragraphs with the same content. Which one is easier to read?

#2 use appropriate font sizes and colors

font size and color play an important role in the readability of your blog content. don't try to impress your readers by using random font sizes and colors all over your blog. this will take away the readability of your content. you don't want your content to end up looking like a circus.

stick to the normal font size. a white background (or dark gray) with black text is a good choice that leads to better readability. When choosing a theme for your blog, choose one with a white background and black text.

Using random font sizes and colors will definitely make your content look fun and interesting. however, overall content readability should be your priority. let's see the comparison below to see the difference and let me know your thoughts.

#3 use relevant images within your content

try to insert related images in your blog content to reflect what you are talking about. Your readers will find it easier to understand your content and have related images.

for example, a food blog that shares recipes and cooking instructions. step-by-step cooking instructions images will make the readers much easier to follow.

added images will be more engaging. We are all visual creatures by nature. We prefer to read articles with images rather than just plain text. You can see that I have also inserted the corresponding images in this blog. i'm sure my blog post would appeal less to you if I didn't insert any images.

#4 use headlines to separate your ideas

always differentiate your content through the use of headings. you can do this by using h2 (heading 2) or h3 (heading 3) tags within your content. Your headline should be the most important sentence or message you want to communicate. then you explain and elaborate on that title.

This way your readers will understand what you are going to talk about. it will also lead to more readers of your content.

below is an example title I used in one of my blog posts.

#5 use conversational speech

try using conversational writing in your blog posts. make sure your blog post text isn't too difficult for the audience you're writing for. don't try to impress your audience by writing an english essay full of advanced vocabulary.

you should always express your opinions and ideas to your audience in a way that is communicative. the same way you would have a discussion with your friend. Conversational writing is more engaging. This makes your readers feel like you are having a personal conversation with them.

conversational writing will lead to more trust and result in more people reading your content.

Why target keywords?

if your content ranks high on google, you can get consistent traffic over time.

For example, we published this post on advanced google search operators in 2018. as of this date, we are still getting a lot of organic traffic:

but you can't just publish a random post and expect search traffic to come your way. to get consistent organic traffic, you need to write about topics that people are searching for

This is why you should target keywords with your blog posts.

how to target keywords with blog posts

you now know why keyword targeting is important. but how exactly do you "target" them?

Here's how.

1. find keyword ideas

The process starts with deciding which keywords you want to target. we're not just looking for random keywords—we're looking for relevant keywords that people are looking for.

The easiest way to do this is to use a keyword tool. keyword tool is a database of words and phrases with their Seo metrics. They show you a list of ideas based on the seed keyword idea you entered.

you can use any keyword research tool. Many of them are free. However, most free keyword tools are limited in some way—they may have a small database, poor or no filters, lack seo metrics, and more.

This can make it difficult to make good decisions.

so we recommend that you use a "professional" keyword tool like ahrefs' keywords explorer. here's how to use the tool to find keyword ideas:

  • enter one (or a few) relevant seed keywords, for example, try plugging in keywords like "coffee," "latte," "french press," etc., if you have a coffee blog.
  • go to the matching terms report
  • switch the tab to questions

you will find that there are over 300,000 potential keywords that you can target. that's a lot - and most of them are probably very competitive. if you're just starting out, it's a good idea to target keywords like:

  • high in traffic potential (tp) – tp is the estimated amount of search traffic you could potentially gain if you ranked #1 for that topic. we calculate this by estimating the amount of search traffic the #1 page is currently receiving.
  • keyword difficulty (kd) – kd is how difficult it is for a keyword to rank in the top 10 organic search results.

use the available filters to reduce the list down:

from here, you can go through the list and choose those keywords that are relevant to your site

2. identify search intent

google's goal is to rank the most relevant content for any query. as such, it tries to understand why a searcher is googling that keyword so that it can serve up the most relevant results.

That means, to rank high on google, we need to identify and match search intent. Fortunately, we can do this by looking at the current top-ranking pages for your target query. specifically, we want to identify the three cs of search intent:

  • content type - the dominant type of content in the serps - in this case, blog posts.
  • content format – formatting of influential content, such as guides, lists, reviews, and more.
  • angle of subject - dominant angle. examples include current year, for beginners, simple and easy, and more.

for example, let's look at the top-ranking pages for the keyword "how to clean a coffee maker":

  • content type - they are all blog posts.
  • format of content – most of them are how-tos.
  • angle of content - looks like a few of them mentioned "with vinegar". this could be a possible angle that you want to go for.

if you're targeting this keyword, for example, perhaps you should create a guide to cleaning a coffee maker (perhaps with vinegar!).

3. create the content

Keyword targeting with blog posts is no longer about stuffing as many keywords as possible. This is an ancient technique that no longer works. if you want to rank high on google, you need to show google that your content is relevant and deserves to be on the first page.

by matching the search intent, you've already cleared the first hurdle. but how can you show google that your content deserves to be there?

here's how:

a. cover important subtopics

if there are sub-topics that cover almost all of the top-ranking pages, that's a sign that searchers are looking for them.

here's how to find these subtopics:

  • paste a few top-ranking urls for your topic into ahrefs' content gap tool
  • leave the bottom blank
  • hit show keywords
  • set the intersection filter to targets 3 and 4

we can see that the top pages cover topics such as:

  • What is earned media?
  • examples of earned media
  • examples of owned media
  • examples of media provided
  • paid media vs. earned media
  • owned media vs. earned media

and more

if we cover this topic ("earned media"), we probably need to cover these subtopics as well. even better: you can use it as a potential h2 to organize your content.

b. invest in a good reader experience

you should make sure that your content is easy to read. after all, the purpose of your blog post is not only to rank but also to get the reader to consume your content.

follow these tips to create an effortless reading experience:

  • use descriptive subheadings (h2–h6) for classification
  • use bullets to aid in skimming
  • use images and gifs (where needed) to break up text
  • use short sentences and paragraphs to avoid "walls of text".
  • use simple words that everyone can understand
  • write the way you would speak to make things conversational
  • read your copy aloud (while editing) to smooth the flow.

c. don’t forget your on-page seo

Your on-page seo is the "icing" on the cake that helps make it doubly clear to google and searchers that your page is relevant.

here are the basics:

  • use keywords in titles (if possible) – google has confirmed the importance of titles in 2020. if this is difficult, don't shoehorn the keyword—use a close variation instead.
  • use short, descriptive urls – a descriptive url, usually keywords, helps searchers understand what the page is about before clicking.
  • write a compelling meta description – this is not a ranking factor, but it helps entice searchers to click on your results.
  • use descriptive alt text - this helps google understand images better
  • links to relevant internal and external resources – linking to relevant internal and external resources helps visitors navigate your website and find more information.
